Katharine Hepburn's Brownies

List of Ingredients:

Katharine Hepburn's Brownies2 squares (ounces) unsweetened chocolate
1 stick (1/4 pound) butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (totally optional -- I do not like nuts in my brownies)*

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
2. Butter an 8-inch square baking pan.
3. Melt the chocolate with the butter over low heat in a large saucepan; stir until completely melted.
4. Remove from the heat and stir in the sugar; add eggs and vanilla extract and beat mixture well.
5. Stir in the flour, and salt (and walnuts -- if so desired) and mix well.
6. Pour the batter into the 8-inch square -- buttered -- baking pan.
7. Bake for 37-40 minutes at 325 degrees F.
8. Remove.
9. Let cool (for as long as you can hold out).

You can eat these without a glass of milk, but I don't recommend it.

What I do, sometimes, is put a warm brownie on a plate, put some Haagen Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream on the brownie, and then pour some warmed butterscotch sauce on top of them. This is delicious.

If you are really depraved, you could take a brownie, spread a bunch of peanut butter on it, then put another brownie of the same size on top of that and eat it like a sandwich.

You could also eat the brownie with a dollop of whipped cream or creme fraiche on top.

I got this recipe from my mom, who got it from, I think, a magazine article about Katharine Hepburn. It is, apparently, her family's. Hence the name...

*Also, here's a tip. If you are making these for a group of people and you don't know if they like nuts in their chewy brownies, or if they might be allergic to nuts -- don't put the nuts in. Here's why: if you like nuts in brownies, the brownies aren't ruined for you if there are no nuts in them; if someone doesn't like nuts (or can't eat nuts), there's a good chance that that person will simply not have any. It's not like I'm suggesting leaving the pecans out of a pecan pie recipe -- brownies don't need nuts; they are about the chocolate.
