Loretta Young passed away from ovarian cancer August 12, 2000. Mini biography from the IMDb: Sweet, sweeter, sweetest, cloyingly so. I added the "cloyingly so." I never particularly liked Loretta Young. She was always too goody-goody. But a lot of people did like her. I know her best from The Bishop's Wife, with Cary Grant and David Niven. That is a Christmastime classic. A great cast, Gregg Toland photography, Hugo Friedhofer score. A great sense of yuletide spirit. I can only think of two stories about her. The first is that she worked on The Call of the Wild in 1935 and got pregnant by Clark Gable. She had the kid and the studio and everybody told the public that it was an adoption. Years later when the child was a teenager Clark Gable came over to the house one day and met the girl. She wasn't told that he was her father until after his death. A great quote about Loretta from Marlene Dietrich is "Every time she sins, she builds a church. That's why there are so many Catholic churches in Hollywood." In 1948, while working on Rachel and the Stranger with Robert Mitchum and William Holden, she installed a box that the cast and crew were to insert a quarter into every time they swore on set. The money would then be given to some Catholic charity or whatnot. Well, one day, Mitchum came in really pissed off about something, jammed a five dollar bill into the box and just let go with a long list of expletives. Loretta was born Gretchen Michaela Young, on January 6, 1913, in Salt Lake City, Utah. First film: The
