Hot Movie Links (and other links)!

I was talking to my friend Deana on the IM one day, I think she was stuck at work on a Saturday with nothing to do, so she asked me to recommend sites. Then I thought, hey these are some good links, I think I'll put them on my links page. My links page was originally a movies links page, but I think I'll expand it to include any links I like. Problem is, as this grows it's going to be very difficult to index. Oh well, we'll Glenn that Ford when we come to it. Of course a lot of these links won't be around forever, if you notice they are dead links, send me a note... tedstrong@tedstrong.com. And now Deana's links:

Adding new ones at the top now:

My native language is Dutch, not English. I have a weblog called http://hoochiekoochie.skynetblogs.be with a link to your site. So sorry you can't read Dutch [me too!], but maybe one day I'll try the English language... [Your English seems already much better than my Dutch -- or my second language of any choice...] I admire your presence in  this world. If you're interested, I also have a flickr page: www.flickr.com/photos/martinpulaski/. If you like these things, you're welcome. Kind regards..."

This article is no longer available at the Sun-Times site, so I have posted it here.

  • DVD, etc Producers:
  • DVDFILE.com -- With so many DVDs pouring into the marketplace, sometimes you need a little guidance before hitting the video store (or Netflix). DVDFILE.com is a consumer-oriented site that offers exhaustive information about the DVD world. There's info about upcoming releases, disc reviews, discussion boards, petitions to get your favorite films released on DVD, news on bootlegs and glitches, and great techie FAQ for neophytes. DVDFILE has been around since 1998 and has amassed a large database of thoughtful reviews that you can trust (they praise Monsoon Wedding and make fun of Beaches). The most useful part of the site is the exhaustive review section, which describes not only the movie, but also the audio and video quality and any supplemental content. And for those looking to buy, the reviews can link to a price list for major online retailers. A must-visit website for any DVD geek... er, enthusiast. -- HANA YOO.

All the others are lunatic fringe, and mainly Christian (of course, home of the lunatic fringe), some fascist, Nazi, Communist. There is that Independent Party, but it's still way too unstable.
  • Very funny, very strange site from Japan -- Candygirl & Fantastic -- but marketed to the US. I think they sell blow up dolls for sexual pleasure. You just gotta see it. It could be a gag site by some college kids, I haven't spent enough time on it. Although my "Candygirl Latex with beautifull face, changeable head, removable arms and legs, can sit possible" should arrive any day...
  • The Girl Scouts' Peanut Butter Patties.

  • Movies are very important. Of course, most of them suck, or are mediocre at best, but the greatest of cinema is art. This page will grow. The first great film site is Internet Movie Database (imdb.com). Do you have a question about who was in a film, what films a particular actor was in, who directed what film, who did the music, what awards a film one, what films are coming out soon or are being made, when an actor or director or producer or writer was born and where and when and where he died, and the list goes on... you go to the Internet Movie Database.
  • Movie Review Query Engine (mrqe.com) is a great site that gets together links to film reviews in various publications, etc. For instance, if you want to see reviews for Catch Me If You Can, you just type in Catch Me If You Can into the little box and hit enter and then a list of reviews from various sites (SF Chronicle, NY Times, LA Times, Premiere, Movieline, Salon, etc) appears magically! Well, not magically.

  • Film restoration is very important. I will try to make this as short and painless as possible for the layman. Movies sit on shelves and the film celluloid dissolves. Right now I am unsure of the numbers, but apparently more than half of the films made before 1950 no longer exist. They will never be seen by us, they are impossible to get back. I know that at least one early Hitchcock film is gone. All that survives of it is about 6 still photos. So... some important film restoration links to learn more, and to support, and all that whatever are...

Most recently I found out that the song in the Levi's commercial with the guy and girl in the street with the stampeding buffaloes is Summer by Mogwai on the album Ten Rapid. Buy the album. Watch the advert at the Levi's site.
