Thandie Newton

This page will no longer be updated as the site has gotten too large to keep it all properly updated.

Born November 6, 1972, Zambia. I was born November 6, 1970.

The first time I remember noticing Thandie Newton was when Jefferson in Paris came out in 1995. She played Sally Hemings to Nick Nolte's Jefferson. I never saw the film. It got mediocre reviews and was gone quickly. Before that I had seen her in Interview with a Vampire, but didn't really remember her.

After Tupac died, and Gridlock'd stopped playing in the theatres, I heard good things about it and so rented it. I remember knowing who Thandie was when I rented it. I remember knowing she was beautiful. The movie was good. Sort of a dark comedy. They were both good as was Tim Roth. I was still pronouncing her name as "than-dee" rather than "tan-dee" as we now know.

I never did see bloated Oprah's bloated Beloved. But I did see Bertolucci's Besieged with Thandie and David Thewlis. It was better than people gave it credit for, and Thandie was very strong in it.

Finally now she is recieving a lot of media coverage, costaring in Tom Cruise's rather empty Mission: Impossible 2.

Thandie is the daughter of a Zimbabwean mother (a princess of the Shona tribe) and an English father. She lived in Zambia until political unrest caused her family to move back to England, where she lived in Cornwall on England's south coast until age 11. At that time she enrolled in London's Art Educational School where she studied modern dance.

A back injury forced her out of dance. This led to her auditioning for and receiving her first role in John Duigan's "Flirting". She moved to L.A. to pursue acting -- and her then boy friend. Receiving no work because of her British accent, she returned to England where she went to Cambridge to study, and received a degree in anthropology. However, between semesters she continued her acting and became noticed in demand for future film roles. Married Ol Parker in 1998.
