Born Terence Steven McQueen; March 24, 1930, Beech Grove, Indiana. Died November 7, 1980, Juárez, Mexico.

2008: Robert Relyea (Steve McQueen's right hand man at Solar Productions) has a new book, "Not So Quiet on the Set." Here's the Press Release.

Steve McQueen died nearly a quarter of a century ago, of cancer, in a Mexican hospital. He was 50. Today, McQueen is a legend, an icon. He has been going through a Renaissance of sorts over the past 5 or so years. His style of acting is the type that does not date. McQueen underplayed beautifully. He was not a stage actor; he was not a Method ham. Offscreen he was insecure, could barely read, couldn't stop cheating on his wives, drank too much, and could be a real dick to people. But he knew the camera. He knew how to draw people in. The smallest gestures, the slightest expressions. He knew how to use props to his full advantage; to make the most out of lines that his peers could have never made come to life. His ten best films, according to me, of course, are:

  1. Bullitt (1968)
  2. The Getaway (1972)
  3. The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
  4. The Cincinnati Kid (1965)
  5. Hell Is For Heroes (1962)
  6. Junior Bonner (1972)
  7. The Great Escape (1963)
  8. Love with the Proper Stranger (1963)
  9. The Magnificent Seven (1960)
  10. Soldier in the Rain (1963)
